Natural Landscaping In Our Cities – How Residents and Businesses Can Design Beautiful Outdoor Spaces, Save Money and Benefit Our World
Facilitator – Susan Green.  Susan is an organic gardener and landscaper who is presently transforming a traditional suburban 1950’s landscape around her home in Nanaimo. She is a lawyer with a Masters in International Environmental Law.

Traditional landscaping dominates the cityscape. With its expanse of green lawn, sculpted hedges and borders of exotic plants, this outdated style uses copious amounts of water, chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, and significant amounts of energy. Traditional landscaping not only depletes a disproportionate quantity of the earth’s resources, it separates us from nature, reduces the quality of our lives, and does not meet our needs as individuals or as a society.

Natural landscaping on the other hand reduces water, energy and chemical consumption, helps preserve native plant and animal species, preserves or enhances the environment, and increases pleasure. It is encouraged by dozens of municipalities and governments throughout North America, and is a growing social movement. Natural Landscaping is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and in keeping with a holistic world view.

In this presentation, the elements of natural landscaping will be outlined, and designs presented for incorporation in home landscaping and small urban businesses. Practical ideas will be given, and guidelines for new designs outlined.

Facilitators:  Louise Taylor BMus, Orff 3, Dalcroze Crt. and Mary Jane Wilson CND MA
Hildegard’s theology is a concern for the whole of Creation and the place of humanity as part of that creation.
The cosmology Hildegard presents is an inspired and passionate attempt to represent the world in such a way that we, her audience, will better understand our role in it.  …”to fulfill the Divine plan and to express the fullness and goodness of our own nature.”
Hildegard talks often of the “sweating power” of the earth, of the need to stay “juicy, wet, green, moist and also good humoured.”  Humanity is to “become a flowering orchard, who does good works bearing good fruit just like the earth with its ornamentation of stones and blossoming trees.”
