Living Language Institute initiated workshops for families and children with developmental delays in the spring of 2006.
Workshops are provided for families and children on the autistic spectrum. Workshops are held for one hour a week for 8 weeks.
During the program parents and children learn to play the song games and together generate a community of care. The program has been successfully used with children who are preverbal as well as verbal between the ages of 3 and 12.
The next workshops will begin March 29, 2008.

What is Singing English? Singing English uses the Sound to Symbol Methodology, developed over the past 30 years. It is an important method for developing oral language skills in the context of social play. The method is based on the power of singing, its connection with speaking and the sensory motor coordinations that occur through song games.
The song and game together establish a context for conveying the meaning of the words. It is the repetition over time, while at the same time re-directing the auditory focus of the participants and diversifying the focus of the games that establishes the language and social structures for children. It is an approach which is playful and enjoyed by parents and children alike.
We have found that the song games provide a good way for parents and children to interact with each other as well as for children to interact with other children. The songs are also provided on a CD which can be played in the home to familiarize the child with the music.
