Our program will use an apprentice model. Participants will be engaged in working with children from the beginning of the program. The practicum aspects will be integrated with the theoretical aspects throughout the program. In addition, we will meet the requirements for certification and include the following Areas of Study
Childhood and Child Development
What does childhood mean in today’s world? Do popular images of children match the reality of young people’s lives at home, in school and in work? In what ways is childhood affected by poverty, ill-health and adversity? Do children have different rights and responsibilities from adults? How are modern lifestyles and technologies altering children’s identities, perceptions and play? What are children's own roles in shaping their childhood? These are some of the questions that will be considered.
Working with Children in the Early Years
We will look at practice in relation to working with young children and adults, including parents and caregivers, enabling you to become aware of the nature of care for children from birth to six. It explores how young children develop and learn. It includes early childhood curriculum and its underpinning principles and values, and develops your understanding of curriculum frameworks in planning for children’s learning, considering the roles of culture, creativity, communication and play.
Supporting Children's Learning in the Early Years
We will focus on the student's role in working with young children including those identified as gifted or talented; those with special educational needs; and those whose mother tongue is other than English. We will examine policy relating to the regulation/promotion of children’s status, welfare, and learning, and the way it impacts on children and adults in the home, in early years settings, and in out-of-school contexts.
Ways of Knowing: Language, Mathematics and Science in the Early Years
You will explore the ways in which children develop and learn in (and through) the areas of oral language, the arts, literacy, mathematics, and science. You will examine the underpinning principles and values of established curriculum frameworks and further your understanding of oral language, the arts, literacy, mathematics, and science, both within the curriculum and to meet your own needs as a practitioner.
